Prologue

Unless you were Australian, it was a pretty near perfect start to the Tour de France in Liege, Belgium on Saturday evening.

The Swiss youngster Fabian Cancellara, at 23, won his first ever day at a Tour de France, and Lance Armstrong showed everyone that once again, he has come to the race with one thing in mind -- to win in Paris.

It was an excellent prologue over a little less than four miles. But it was a race which never happened for the luckless Matthew White, a rider who having enjoyed his stay on the US Postal team, left this year so he could find a place in the Tour de France.

Now, with Cofidis already rocking from a year of discontent and drugs scandals, White compounded everything by crashing during a warm up ride and breaking his collar bone.

White came to the team this year with his Australian mate, Stuart O'Grady, and now Stuart has admitted he is going to miss White as they are almost blood brothers on the Tour.

Australia's woes continued when Michael Rogers fell and faded away. And another prologue favorite, Brad McGee, blamed a little sickness and specialized mountain training, for his fourth-placed ride, beaten by nine seconds to the win he got last year.

The Belgian people endorsed their love for the sport by turning out in their thousands. On Sunday, expect many thousands more, as Cancellara becomes the first Swiss leader since Alex Zulle in 1996.

The race is underway, and already, this grand Tour of 101 years has started delivering the stories.
