Stage 15
Great champions understand great moments, and they want their names to be a part of the monuments of cycling, and Lance Armstrong is no exception. Maybe he is the defining man of the current generation to be able to do that.
To win a stage, in order to get the yellow jersey, is something very special. It’s something Lance Armstrong always wanted to do. He’s always dreamed about racing up Alpe d'Huez in the yellow jersey. He will get his wish on the stage to Alpe d'Huez.
Lance Armstrong got the yellow from Thomas Voeckler, who put in such a courageous ride from Stages 5-15. Thomas Voeckler finally gave over the jersey to Lance Armstrong, after an incredible defense in the
Pyrenees
. Voeckler was not believed to be capable of keeping the jersey past pas La Mongie, but he proved all of the pundits wrong, keeping that jersey all the way to the stage to Villard-de-Lans.
Lance Armstrong was so incredibly prepared and focused for this year’s Tour, that he was unstoppable on the stage to Villard-de-Lans. He took time out of all of his rivals. A little bit out of Jan Ullrich. Plus a time bonus. He now sits over a minute ahead of Basso, and six and a half minutes over Jan Ullrich.
It was great riding from the USPS team. A big slice of cherry pie for Floyd Landis, who did 40km on the front to chase down the incredible attack put in by Jan Ullirch on the cat 1 climb along the course.
It was a fantastic day for USPS, and an historical moment for Lance Armstrong and his quest for six
Tours
.
