Stage 6
Dangerous. That's what these flat stage are. The tough thing is that a crash can be at any point in the race. Luckily for all the major contenders today, the big mass pile up was just inside the final kilometer.
So Ullrich, Armstrong, Hamilton and Voeckler, the race leader, were able to benefit from the last kilometer rule. That is to say, if there is a crash or mechanical incident in the last 1000 meters, everyone involved gets the same time as the first man over the line.
So as almost the whole field was stopped when the road was blocked ,the results showed that everyone was credited with the same time as Tom Boonen. The 23-year-old Belgian getting the first Tour de France victory of his career was ahead of the mayhem. Although the crash was spectacular, it didn't affect the outcome of the stage.
Armstrong was pretty vocal after the finish yesterday dubbing the sprinters as "absolutely crazy" in the way they charged into the last corners of the race. Taking risks that put not only themselves in peril, but also their fellow competitors.
Tomorrow's another day in the office. Let's hope this is not going to be the year of the crash and the race will return to some kind of normality!
